Week in the Woods (24 XII 19)

Winter Break has begun and that gives me more chances to get out hiking with Cassie. The cold which has enveloped us for many weeks broke right on time and left the woods a little soggy but full of interesting things to discover.

Look at these beauties. They’re pixie cap lichen, as far as I can tell. The tallest one is less than an inch tall. And here’s how I found them.

Walk in the Woods

I meant to combine these pictures with some others, but the bitter cold has kept Cassie & me grounded for most of the last two weeks. Still, we found some cool stuff in the woods last week and I thought I’d share some of it with you.

A beautiful but invasive species of mushroom found in my area.

I think this toothy beauty is Radulodon copelandii, an Asian invasive that is spreading across the Northeast & Midwest.

Once More in the Woods

Weather, lack of daylight, and life have severely limited the time my daughter & I have been in the forest lately, but we did get a bit of hiking in over the last week or so. Pennsylvania is stuck in a drab pre-Winter period, but it’s still a joy to hike through the ever-changing woods with Cassie.

Nature still shows a mossy splash of color on a late Fall hike in the forest.

Week in the Woods (28X19)

It was a bit of a slow week in woods for Cassie & me, as rain and a busy schedule kept us grounded more than we would have liked. Still, we got a few good hikes in the cool Autumn air.

Colorful mushrooms discovered on a hike with my daughter.

We didn’t see anything as unusual as last week, but stumbled upon a few sprigs of beauty nonetheless. Continue reading “Week in the Woods (28X19)”

Week in the Woods (21 X 19)

We finally got a bit of rain, the weather was cool, and skies were blue overhead. The mushrooms were out again and the leaves showed some real Fall color at last.

Richly colored leaves fallen by the trail, spotted on a hike through Raccoon Creek State Park near Pittsburgh.

My daughter & I got out into the woods as often as we could, eager to take advantage of the last weeks of long days. Continue reading “Week in the Woods (21 X 19)”

Week in the Woods (14 X 19)

It was a tough one out there this week. The leaves haven’t turned yet, but Summer’s standouts are long gone. Mushrooms are scarce, as we’ve had little rain. We didn’t entirely strike out, though!

Strange pink mushrooms found on a hike with my daughter.

I found these odd beauties on a pine log. It looked like someone had wadded their bubble gum on the moss!

Week in the Woods (6 X 19)

Though most of the week was unseasonably hot, reaching nearly ninety degrees Fahrenheit, Fall arrived at last this past weekend. Long sleeves and wonderfully brisk air in the forest made my hikes with Cassie extra fun.

Some much needed rain also brought new mushrooms bursting from the earth. Continue reading “Week in the Woods (6 X 19)”
