Ogryn Imperial

I smashed out another mini project over the last week, an ogryn bust painted to look like a soldier in the Imperial Army of the Warhammer 40k universe.

This fun, simple bust was sculpted by the legendary Alfonso Giraldez, AKA Banshee. The model can be purchased from his webstore.

I continued working on the nuanced, lively, rich skintones I’ve been chasing for months. I’m never 100% satisfied with my work, but I feel like this represented a valuable experiment in my effort to dial in a method for achieving my intended result.

The figure was very large, offering good opportunities for wet blending, glazing, and other techniques. And the eyes were big enough to really push the detail for once.

I wanted to leave enough Easter eggs around the model to reward a careful look. From the three tattoos to the glowing cigar tip to the golden tooth, I wanted to create details that would lend some personality to this character.

Thanks for looking. Let me know what you think!

  1. This feels very strange to say but the stubble/hair on his chest really looks great! It looks realistic in the photo (as does the stubble for that matter). I think little touches like this and the cigar really make this an excellent piece. You’re going from strength to strength on these busts and I think I can see improvement with each one too. Very impressive work!

    1. Thanks bud. I decided I wasn’t going to shy away from those kind of particularizing details just because they introduced a risk of failure. I figure I have to reach for the actual goal rather than stopping when it looks decent. Hopefully this approach yields results now and in the future.
