Santa’s ugly little helper is finished! I had the week off and found plenty of time to get this miniature bust to the finish line.
Radigundus will be headed overseas as part of a secret Santa mini exchange. I wanted to create something that would look Christmasy enough to remind my recipient of the occasion, but that wouldn’t look out of place the rest of the year.
I had a lot of fun painting Radi and learned some valuable lessons along the way. Seems like I always say that, huh?
My friend Dave Colwell pushed me to develop an ambience through the use of toned light. I used blue light from Radigundus’s right, which shows purple on the hood and green on the shirt, to create a sense of space.
Even though I kept most of my tones fairly reserved, I pushed the red of the hood as far as I could. I achieved the saturation by glazing red ink over orange and white.
You’ll also notice I switched over to a white background for the photos. We’ll see how that goes for a while. I seem to be getting better fidelity and more appealing images than I was over black.
As always, I’d love to hear what you think. Hope your hobby is treating you right!
