I’m not sure why, but I had a mind to draw a bit of knitting. My mom really likes to knit, and maybe I was looking at one of the hats she has given me. But I was suddenly seized with the urge to try out the texture of wooly clothing with my pens, markers, and colored pencils.
I drew this yesterday. The colors are mostly Copics (with a tiny touch of Prismacolor colored pencil). The pens are all Pigma microns, black, sepia, and brown. I really like it. I just like looking at it. I was very flattered when my daughter Cassie tried to feel the little bumps.
The drawing above was another I made this past weekend. I was trying to capture the look of the crazy yarns my mom knits with. They change color over the course of the spool and create all these magical and unpredictable patterns in her socks. Perhaps you can see that I tried to loosen up the technique a bit between the two drawings. This one was colored entirely with colored pencil.
This little texture study was the genesis of the idea. I drew the swatch of knitting with pens and then knew I had to try again with added color.
This was my first attempt with color. It isn’t finished because I realized the color ranks are arranged in the wrong direction! It pays to look at your hat before you draw it!
I think I’ll draw some more of this sort of thing. Let me know what you think in the Comments below.
